Vladimir Rakov's stance on the war in Ukraine
Following the outbreak of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Vladimir Rakov voluntarily enlisted in the Ukrainian military, serving in the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo (2nd Rifle Battalion).
Rakov's decision to fight for his homeland was commented on by a close friend of Vladimir:
He had a great job abroad. When I asked him, 'Why did you come back?', he replied: 'I came to defend Ukrainians and Ukraine.'
Vladimir Rakov's death was reported by his friend, choreographer Halyna Pekha.

Vladimir was awarded the "Golden Cross" honor for bravery and efficiency in combat.
Honoring his memory
In September 2025, Kyiv hosted the premiere of the documentary film "Match in a Haystack," which was dedicated to the memory of dancer and choreographer Vladimir Rakov.
Tragically, Ukraine continues to lose its finest sons and daughters. Vladimir Rakov had every opportunity to live peacefully abroad, yet chose to return and defend his motherland. Instead of the stage, he chose the front lines and freedom. His sacrifice stands as an inspiring testament to courage, integrity, and devotion to human dignity.
