OverDrive's Stance on the War in Ukraine
At the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Aleksey Biryukov took a wait-and-see, ambiguous stance. On February 27, 2022, he published a post on his Telegram channel in which he described what was happening as "horror", while refraining from identifying those responsible or directly criticizing Russian armed aggression:
Friends, right now I'm in no mood for esports at all, my thoughts are on only one thing. No words. Horror...
Despite this "neutral" start, the streamer's subsequent conduct clearly demonstrated his alignment with Russian state propaganda and support for aggressive pro-war rhetoric.
Z-Symbolism Scandals and Insults Against Ukrainians
OverDrive's true position became obvious through his behavior on live broadcasts and conflicts with Ukrainian colleagues.
- Singing propaganda anthems: While commentating on a match, Overdrivezzz began singing the song "Ya Russkiy" (I am Russian) by pro-Kremlin singer SHAMAN, a track heavily weaponized in the Russian Federation to promote the war.
- Using Z-symbols and making threats: The most notorious scandal occurred during a collaborative stream with Ukrainian content creator Mokrivskyi. Knowing full well that Mokrivskyi is Ukrainian, OverDrive provoked him, flaunted Z-symbolism, and typed a monstrous insult in chat: "I'll tattoo a Z on your mother's face." Following the incident, Roman Mokrivskyi called OverDrive a "f**king Z-patriot."
Later, OverDrive attempted to justify himself for using Z-symbols, conceding the fact that he used them, yet failing to offer any sincere apology for the aggressive context of his actions.
Conflicts with Anti-War Streamers
OverDrive regularly attacks content creators who oppose the war.
He publicly expressed open hostility toward streamer JesusAVGN, who is widely known for his sharp condemnation of Putin's regime. In response, JesusAVGN accused OverDrive of blatant hypocrisy and lacking a coherent moral compass, and also revealed that Biryukov had threatened him with physical violence.
OverDrive's aggressive behavior targeted others as well:
- During a match, he referred to a Ukrainian esports player as a "creature."
- Ukrainian streamer inkmate0, supported by JesusAVGN, called out OverDrive for ignoring and downplaying the military aggression of the Russian Federation.
- Popular streamer Evelone192 likewise condemned Biryukov's remarks, expressing solidarity with Ukrainians and noting that tasteless jokes feel entirely different to people sheltering under bombs and sirens.
He is registered with Roskomnadzor via Gosuslugi. This signifies that the Russian state officially monitors and regulates his activities.
