Shortparis is a Russian musical collective composed of contemporary artists from Saint Petersburg, stylistically defining their sound as post-pop, pop-noir, and avant-pop, positioning themselves in opposition to the mainstream music scene. The band was formed in 2012. The group's frontman was Nikolai Komyagin.

Shortparis on the war in Ukraine

Listening to this artist's tracks on official streaming platforms, social media, and other services indirectly contributes to financing the war — through taxes paid to the budget of the Russian Federation.

The musicians refused to perform in occupied Crimea:

Nikolai Komyagin: «Proceeding from postmodern discourse, it doesn't matter where to play. Since we maintain the posture of a 'free musician', if we wish — we perform in Ukraine, and if we wish — we would play in Crimea. But in reality, I would most likely decline.

Danila Kholodkov (drummer): »We haven't discussed this yet, but I will state immediately, guys: I categorically refuse to play in Crimea. The moment you do that – you become a damn hostage of political games.

Shortparis’s Position on the War in Ukraine

On February 26, 2022, the Kolpinsky District Court of Saint Petersburg fined Nikolai Komyagin 10,000 rubles for participating in an anti-war protest demonstration (against the waging of the so-called "SMO" in Ukraine).

Komyagin's arrest for participating in an anti-war rally

Despite the prevailing political conditions, on March 22, 2022, the band announced a concert tour across cities of Russia:

In May 2022, during an interview with the YouTube channel «eshenepozner», Nikolai Komyagin contrasted Volodymyr Zelenskyy's open and informal style of communication with the public against the aloof Russian authority that fails to engage with its citizens in any meaningful way:

I watched Mr. Zelenskyy's interview, and aside from the substantive aspects, what struck me once more was how informally he structures the conversation, how completely different of a level of political interaction with the public this represents. We understand that many things can be manipulative, many things can be performative. But this is an entirely different culture of dialogue between state authority and society. If only our authorities simply permitted themselves to converse with the populace just as directly, not via a press secretary, but openly, honestly, without relentless detours into history, genuine human conversation: where your pain lies, what you worry about, where you acknowledge your mistakes... just a living, breathing flow of dialogue. But our state over centuries has erected this insurmountable wall... Whenever they speak with us, it is strictly from above, from the perspective of an authoritarian lecture monologue that completely discards my subjectivity and the subjectivity of the people to hell...

In December 2022, during a live Shortparis concert in Saint Petersburg, the audience repeatedly chanted "No to war!".

When questioned about why the band does not leave Russia despite possessing a significant audience abroad, Komyagin referenced the Russian traditional folk ballad «Gore moe, gore» («Grief of Mine, Grief»):

These are troubled times, and a number of our friends have left Russia for diverse reasons... the grief that our country is grieving right now as well, we must mourn together, living through this period together... I feel that I am duty-bound to remain here. For us, this represents our current strategy of existence.

In contrast to the vast majority of Russian-language artists presently performing abroad, the musicians of Shortparis do not announce fundraisers, do not display flags, and do not make overt political declarations from the stage.

Periodically, the band encounters venue cancellations in the Russian Federation, while pro-war Z-activists continuously lobby intelligence and security agencies to inspect the artists for "discrediting" the Russian military and designate them foreign agents.

Death of Nikolai Komyagin

On February 20, 2026, news broke regarding the sudden passing of Nikolai Komyagin. The 39-year-old musician felt suddenly unwell following a boxing training session; the stated cause of death was cardiac arrest.
