Slaughter to Prevail is a Russian-American deathcore band founded in 2014 in Yekaterinburg. Frontman and vocalist: Aleksandr Shikolai (Alex Terrible).

Slaughter to Prevail's stance on the war in Ukraine
Initial statements following the invasion
On February 26, 2022, two days after the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Slaughter to Prevail published a post on Facebook in a generic "peace to the world" tone. At the same time, they declared that they "do not take anyone's side":
No to war! We do not take anyone's side. We are for peace and wish everyone to stay safe.

On March 1, 2022, Terrible published another statement on behalf of the band on Instagram and YouTube, also urging viewers "not to make all Russian people accomplices":
We are against the war. It hurts a lot to watch what is happening in Ukraine. Please do not blame all Russian people
On August 9, 2022, Slaughter to Prevail released the song "1984", inspired by George Orwell's novel, as a protest against the government and the war.
Relocation to the United States
The band relocated to Orlando, Florida, due to the repercussions of the war and earlier repressions by the Russian government, as well as an interest in Florida's death metal scene.
Interview with Revolver (2022)
On August 12, 2022, an interview with Shikolai was published in the American magazine Revolver. The interview once again featured rather vague statements about the band being "against the war." However, another aspect drew attention: Alex Terrible was left without work and income, which led to his decision to transfer his business to the US:
Because of the war, I lost business connections and quickly decided to move my business to America
If you speak out against the war, you can get a fine or even end up in prison
This situation [with Ukraine] really touched me, because it is not a war [somewhere else], it is a war at my home. My people are going to another country — to Ukraine — and killing each other.
If I lived in Mariupol and lost my family, I would hate the Russian government. I think every normal person in Russia is against the war
Cancellation of concerts in Russia
In November 2022, the band's concerts in Moscow and Saint Petersburg were canceled. The musicians commented as follows:
Due to the unstable political situation and risks to our future lives, we are canceling concerts in Russia. When the war ends, we will definitely return
Interview with Dud
In November 2024, Shikolai gave an interview to Yury Dud, in which he once again asserted his apolitical nature and stated that he respects his country:
I do not want to take part in this conflict and comment on it. Right now I just want to focus on music
I was born and raised in Russia. It's my home. I am Russian. My parents instilled in me that I must respect, love, and cherish my country, no matter what happens
Love for Russia and attitude toward the war
In April 2025, Aleksandr Shikolai gave an interview to ruboxingtv, in which he persistently emphasized his love for Russia. He referred to the war as the "SMO" and spoke about attitudes toward Russians abroad:
All over the world, Russians are treated great. I have never faced hate simply because I am Russian
During a visit to Russia, the musician also visited the cadet school where he had studied and spoke to students about pride in Russia:
And even in times when everyone is bashing Russia and calling it bad names, we go out with the Russian flag. And we are proud that we are from Russia
He answered the question of whose Crimea is:
Crimeans'! Well, definitely not mine. How the f**k should I know whose Crimea is.
The musician also reiterated that he is always for Russia:
I have always been for Russia... I grew up in Russia, I am Russian, and I will always promote my culture. Every person must respect their nation and remember their roots
Visit to Russia and army "discreditation" case
On May 31, 2025, during a music video shoot in the Moscow region, Aleksandr Shikolai was detained along with everyone on the film set. The reason given was the lack of filming permits:
Nothing serious happened. They just checked documents. The issue was that we had not coordinated the location with the local administration. That's why we paid an administrative fine
On July 8, 2025, the Nagatinsky District Court of Moscow received an administrative protocol against Aleksandr Shikolai under the article regarding "discrediting" the Russian army. In June, the anti-extremism "Center E" found a clip of Shikolai's 2022 video on Rutube where the musician criticized the mobilization:
I read the news about partial mobilization. Pseudo-patriots, where are you now? If a draft notice arrives for you, what will you do? Piss your pants or report for training?« the musician said in the video with a smirk. Furthermore, Aleksandr stated that Russians »have no business being« in Ukraine, while Ukrainians »have something to fight for
According to the court ruling, Shikolai was detained on the morning of the same day in Moscow and brought to court. He pleaded guilty and explained that "the remark was made out of emotion." The artist claimed that he now helps "SMO" fighters, as friends of his had gone to the front (editor's note: there is no independent confirmation of this information). As reported by the court's press service, Shikolai was fined 50,000 rubles.
On July 11, 2025, Alex Terrible took part in a bare-knuckle fight at the CSKA Arena in Moscow as part of the Top Dog 37 tournament. At the end of his visit to Russia, Aleksandr wrote on Telegram:

Thank you, Moscow. For the good and the bad. For the experience. For the emotions and opportunities. Missed Florida. Flying back!
Conclusions and contradictions in stance
Slaughter to Prevail and its vocalist Aleksandr Shikolai attempt to "sit on two chairs," but the recent visit to Russia showed how difficult that is. Initially, Shikolai stated that he was against the war and criticized mobilization. Later, however, Shikolai increasingly emphasized his love for Russia, began calling the war the "SMO," asserted that he had always stood with Russia, and avoided calling it outright aggression. He seeks to please both foreign audiences and the Russian public — which is why he speaks cautiously, without sharp statements. Ultimately, he appears nominally "for peace," yet remains unready to clearly state who started the war and who bears responsibility for it.
Moreover, the question remains open as to whether Aleksandr actually aids fighters in the so-called SMO, claimed to do so under duress, or never said it at all. As of now, there is neither confirmation nor denial of this information.
