Dmitriy Borodin's stance on the war in Ukraine
Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Dmitriy Borodin made no open public statements regarding the armed conflict. However, he demonstrated his allegiance in 2024 by deciding to perform in occupied Donbas, helping build cultural bridges between the so-called Donetsk People's Republic and Russian regions.
Concerts in occupied territories and in Europe
In September 2024, Borodin performed at the Donetsk Philharmonic with the Donetsk Academic Symphony Orchestra named after S. S. Prokofiev. Following the concert, the artist shared his impressions of the performance and his visit to occupied Donetsk, and also responded to whether he feared losing Western stages:
No, absolutely not. We have plenty of work in our own country.
This was a rather peculiar response, as Borodin has not given up his Western audience and continues to perform without hindrance across European cities with the Moscow-based music ensemble musicAeterna.

In January 2025, the head of the Donetsk Philharmonic reported on his Telegram channel another visit by Borodin (accompanied by Russian pianist Nail Mavlyudov, who likewise performs internationally):

In fact, performances in Donetsk have turned into routine engagements for the conductor.

Musical institutions in the occupied territories operate under Russian control; therefore, such performances cannot be considered politically neutral. The participation of artists in these concerts is viewed as direct consent to collaborate with Russian authorities and actively promote their cultural propaganda projects.
